Arrowheads @ the HOMS

NOTE: For anyone who reads this, please know that some of the research we do, we will cite the text as written and are not intentionally using terms that may be viewed as derogatory or hurtful. Our home was in existence during a time when language use was different.

We have posted a lot of the "known" facts and conjecture about the HOMS since we bought it (and we still have more to post) however, I wanted to take some time to pepper in some updates about the HOMS details that are not well known, if they are even known at all.

We have been trying to "date" the age of the two covered front porches as earlier photographs show slanted roofs and raised doors meaning the concrete was not poured at that time. Interestingly, over time the path from the road to the front doors shifted from the west door to the east door too. The best we can estimate at this time, they were most likely to have been added by the Brant family (HOMS owners from 1938-2000) and they have an interesting feature that will be the topic of this blog post.

From the photos we have of the HOMS and the known dates, it is likely that sometime between 1966 and 1979 is when the front porches were updated from pitched roofs to the colonial style square, flat top roofs with pillars they are now. We also believe that is when the current concrete front stoops were added. The concrete is inlaid with flagstone and each porch has a stone that was shaped into an arrowhead that points towards the door. We wondered about the significance of this.

SYMBOLGENIE.COM notes that "in Native American cultures, arrows are often associated with protection, strength, and direction. They are seen as tools for hunting and survival, as well as weapons in times of conflict. Arrows also represent communication between humans and the spiritual realm, as they are believed to carry prayers and intentions to the heavens." This symbolism in its simplest form seems to make sense as the HOMS was a known sanctuary (protection), has an incredibly welcoming and comforting energy (strength) and the inlaid arrows direct visitors inside (direction).

The website also notes modern symbolism of arrows include:

  • Moving forward: Arrows can be seen as a representation of progress, moving forward in life, and overcoming obstacles.

  • Direction: Arrows are often used as directional symbols, guiding individuals towards their goals and providing a sense of purpose.

  • Focus and determination: Arrows can symbolize focus, determination, and the ability to stay on course even in the face of challenges.

  • Ambition: The arrow’s pointed shape can be interpreted as a symbol of ambition and the drive to achieve success.

  • Strength and power: Arrows can convey a sense of strength and power, representing the ability to overcome adversity and achieve greatness.

  • Freedom: In some interpretations, arrows are associated with freedom and liberation, representing the desire to break free from constraints and pursue one’s passions.

  • Love and relationships: Arrows can also be seen as symbols of love and relationships, representing the cupid’s arrow that brings two people together.

MEDIUM.COM provided descriptions of what the shape of the arrowhead means. The west porch has a triangular shaped arrowhead, and the east porch has a leaf shaped one. How interesting and thoughtful that they created two different shapes!

  • Triangular Arrowheads: Triangular arrowheads are one of the most common designs found in Native American cultures. They symbolize strength, power, and protection. The sharp edges represent precision and accuracy in hunting or warfare.

  • Leaf-shaped Arrowheads: Leaf-shaped arrowheads are characterized by their elongated triangular shape with a pointed base. These arrowheads are often associated with fertility, growth, and abundance. They represent a connection to nature and the cycle of life.

  • Notched Arrowheads: Notched arrowheads feature distinctive notches along their edges. These markings hold specific cultural significance for different tribes. In some cases, they may indicate a particular tribal affiliation or serve as a form of personal identification.

SPIRITUALITYSHEPHERD.COM addresses the use of arrowheads in home decor. "Arrow symbolism can be integrated into your home decor. Hanging an arrow-themed wall art or having arrow motifs on your cushions, rugs, or curtains can serve as daily reminders of your spiritual path. These items not only add aesthetic value to your home but also bring the spiritual significance of arrows into your everyday life, subtly influencing your thoughts and actions.

The direction in which the arrow points could alter its meaning. An upward-pointing arrow signifies positivity, ambition, and spiritual ascension, while a downward-pointing one indicates grounding and stability.

Through meditation and visualization, tattoos and jewelry, and home decor, arrow symbolism can be woven into your personal spirituality, serving as a guide and reminder of your spiritual journey. The key is to understand and respect the spiritual significance of arrows and use them in a way that resonates with your personal beliefs and aspirations."

If you look closely, the west porch has two actual arrowheads inlaid that we are guessing were most likely found on the property by the Brant family. They were wonderful stewards of the home when they owned it and passed down many items that were found here. There are stories of finding horseshoes, arrowheads, bottles, pottery shards and of course the Civil War bayonet that Ione found buried in the gardens that is still on display in the HOMS today.

No matter what the Brant's intended when they installed these porches, to us it supports everything the HOMS has represented over time!
